How might we increase the practice of water sustainability within Calgary?

GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production | By: Erabell & April

Description

Implementing sustainable water practices within our everyday lives is extremely important, now more than ever. Even though we have an abundance of water available to us now, the future is uncertain, especially considering the amount of water Canadians and Calgarians waste or use carelessly. To ensure water security for generations to come, Calgary needs to continue to implement and encourage water sustainable practices, especially within the residential sector.

A significant amount of water can be wasted or over-consumed within a household without anyone even realizing it. At the same time though, people may be well aware of what they are doing and not caring as much as they should. As a result, money goes down the drain and the overall impact on the environment increases. Unnecessary overconsumption of water can and will put future and current water availability and accessibility at risk. It also affects ecosystems and wildlife and increases contamination which can in turn, put healthy lives at risk. Each drop of water wasted is not only affecting us but also every living thing on Earth. Increased awareness is vital when it comes to conserving and protecting this precious resource.

I have always wondered why some countries lack the clean and drinkable water I grew up with so, I chose this topic to understand and find ways to help, even if it is a little bit. Avoiding wasting any water and avoiding leaks can make such a big difference even if it looks small. These little changes can impact these countries in many different ways. Also, getting used to these sustainable habits will help future generations and allow them to have access to clean and drinkable water too.

Water sustainability has always been a topic I wanted to explore further. I’ve had easy access to clean, drinkable water all my life, but how long will that last? It’s easy to wonder about our water resources, what is available, and how long this precious substance will be accessible to us, especially considering industrial, agricultural, commercial and household factors. There is great importance in finding ways to promote water sustainability within Calgary and even Alberta to preserve for the future. It is eye-opening how much water we waste without even realizing it; a simple leak, for example, can waste more than 1200 litres of water annually.
