Visualizing the Problem

In the years since the COVID pandemic started, drug use and homelessness have been increasing topics of public discussion within Calgary. Harm reduction systems to help those in need do exist, but most would be surprised to learn how few there are. Under the operation of Alberta Health Services, there is only one safe consumption site and one rehabilitation site within a city of over a million people. To help fill the gap left by these government programs, grassroots mutual aid organizations have stepped in to help provide those in need. Between the government programs and grassroots organizations, a web of support has been formed for vulnerable folks; but the cracks often show and there are barriers to expanding for both groups.
